Chapter 18

My mother, my psychotic, monstrous, tentacle-whipping mother treated Lucien really weird. First of all, she was standing in the kitchen wearing an apron and cooking things that smelled like fish and socks cooked together. Also a little bit like old mop water.

She dropped her mixing spoon and embraced Lucien all gentle and loving, no whipping tentacles, no furious hissing, nothing that said, ‘crazy monster who will eat you.’

Haverre stood in the doorway carrying Lucien’s other bag while my mother signed rapidly to Lucien and he answered in a low murmur in a language I’d never heard before, but it was beautiful.

“What’s going on?” my dad said, coming in the back, from the dojo it looked like. He looked tired.

She turned to him and signed rapidly. My dad’s face went from shocked, irritated as he glanced at me, then to delighted as he stepped forward, pumping Lucien’s hand like he’d just won a lottery or something.

“Lucien. It’s so good to meet you. Why don’t you sit down? Gen, put his stuff in the living room. What’s this, Morgan? You’ve been cooking? Let’s eat then.”

Vegan was better than whatever it was my mother cooked. I really should have gotten fast food when I had the chance. I seemed to be the only one who wasn’t ecstatic to eat my mother’s cooking. Haverre, Lucien, and even my dad ate with enthusiasm. Trainchain wasn’t around. Was she with Sean? I pushed the seafood balls around my plate until my mother hissed at me, jabbed a ball with a fork and shoved it in my mouth.

I chewed it and smiled at her. “Mmm,” before I’d had enough weirdness for one life. I pushed away from the table. “I’m going to the dojo. See you guys later.”

Without Trainchain, I was alone in the room, the high ceiling echoing my keeai back to me. I worked on my stance, my Vashni moves for a little while, but came back to karate.

“Why aren’t you in the house with your new monster?” Spyguy asked from the doorway wearing slacks and a button-down, not like he belonged in a dojo.

“That house isn’t big enough for so many monsters. When will Sean get back?”

“Not for a few days. He’s going to take care of some of his dad’s business while he’s out that way.”

His dad’s business, so rescuing some monsters. He didn’t mention that, not like I’d told him about Lucien, but it hadn’t been my secret to tell. My dad hadn’t acted jealous. Was he just not interested in being married to her after ten years of absence?

“What do you think of Lucien, Spyguy?” I asked, walking across the wood floor towards him.

He raised his eyebrows. “I think he’s making himself comfortable in your house.”

I scowled at him. “Yeah, I noticed that. I meant the part where he’s a fighter in the games.”

Spyguy studied me before he walked into the dojo and took my arm. “Wrists like this. Body movement sideways instead of forward. I think I knew your recent houseguest.
